The Building Thinking Classrooms instructional framework developed from over a decade of research by Peter Liljedahl, focuses on enhancing student thinking and engagement in math classes through research-based instructional practices. The framework highlights nine key practices observed across 40 initial math classrooms, encompassing task types, group formation, and classroom organization to optimize learning environments.
A learning community is fostered through implementation as students work collaboratively in small groups and as a whole class to analyze information, make connections, solve problems, and draw conclusions. While specific implementation suggestions are provided, the framework is flexible, allowing educators to adapt practices to best suit their classroom dynamics and student needs.
From the research, 14 practices were identified as highly effective in fostering deep mathematical thinking, which are visually detailed to guide educators in transforming their teaching methods.
The Goochland Education Foundation is excited to support Building Thinking Classrooms.
